A busy weekend but the way I like to roll...

As you can see Nate finished just in time (Sunday morning just a few hours before the big revealing) the 15 foot playhouse on stilts complete with pulley elevator and not finished monkey bars! It was a surprise for Ian's 6th birthday. We thought we were all cool in keeping him from looking in the backyard the past few days with the blinds closed and tricking him to stay in the front because he never asked us why or tried to sneak a look... only to find out as he is pulling himself up in the "elevator" today that he knew the whole time what was going on. A boy who can lie to your face with such an angelic smile...I've decided to go ahead and start saving bail money for this one; yes in deed!

And it's that time of year again...school starts, blue jeans are bought, and soccer begins in the Callender household. Ian decided to play this season after taking the Spring off only to ask Nate (aka "Coach") after being in the game about 3 minutes, "how much longer do I have to stay here?"

Eli on the other hand only cried a few times before leaving the house b/c something about his shoes and what was that about the color of his socks and oh yeah his shorts were too short...mumbling under his breath to us that he hated soccer as he got in the van. Of course then he follows all that drama up with playing so hard on his new 'older boys team' (there are 12 year olds for crying out loud). He really has a talent for this sport and seems to have a drive that comes out of no where while he is on the field. I'm thinking about investing in bi-polar medicine for this one!

Creative overload

Now that the boys are in school it is time for me to gear up for my "school year" activities. Although I swore to everyone that I would never return to preschool to teach I have gone against all common sense and signed back up. But this time I am staying true to the "never will I step into a two year old classroom again ever ever in my life..." and I've gotten the easiest possible job at a preschool! I'm the helper to the Creative Movement teacher (aka. gym teacher on a preschool level). We have no classroom, no diapers to change, no potty training responsibilities, no letters to teach, no parents to deal with!!!! We do get to have each age group for 20 minutes to play with and get them all wound up till they pop only to hand them back over to their teachers! How much fun can that be? And did I mention I plan on losing 10 pounds while doing it? =) Of course if this really ends up stinking I can always blame it on my friend (the actual gym teacher I will be assisting) who asked me to teach with her. We do have plans to be "Hawns and Frawns" one day a month, dressing up with leg warmers, wrist and head bands only to make the kids all sweat to the oldies!

I have to admit though as Tuesday was the first day for teachers to come back and get their rooms together (we have no room so we acted very busy as not to be put into childcare duty) I had my tearful moments about putting sister girl in "the nursery." She is too young for the 1 year old class and that is another reason I chose to come back...she gets her own Grandma Haley to watch her (and a 12 week old baby - darn that mom)! I felt just horribly guilty for putting her in childcare you know a total of 4 1/2 hours twice a week --- I know, I know!!! The best part of all my emotional breakdowns on Tuesday was that Elizabeth was scared to death of Mrs. Haley - thought it was because she was a black woman (no offense to all my black friends out there) but later realized sister girl is just prejudiced against old people. She cries whenever she sees a woman of mature age! (in the grocery store, at church, for goodness sake she even did it with Nate's grandmother, G.G., for the first 9 months of her life! (love ya G.G.)

But Thursday was a little better. She didn't cry when Mrs. Haley looked at her but she wouldn't really get near her. There were lots of "young" (and white - hee hee) helpers in the nursery to help with other teachers' kids while they got their rooms ready so the real test will be when preschool actually begins in about two weeks. I've decided to go visiting nursing homes between now and then! I'll let you know how that idea pans out!

I think because I did nothing at all last year but care for a baby in the house I am now overloading myself with things to do. I also signed up for Creative Activities Leader in my MOPS (mothers of preschoolers) group at church. I've had fun brainstorming ideas for crafts (gotta love the Martha Stewart website) but have already had panic attacks over a stupid name tag craft I'm supposed to create for next week's first meeting. God help me!

And did I not just tell the PTC president this morning sure I'd chair a holiday marketplace fundraiser for the school this November. WHAT AM I THINKING? Note to self...don't take a year off doing nothing ever again!

Other then all that for my "school year" I did sign up to watch the 1 year olds for an hour and half on Wednesday night at church. I figured since my 3 boys (that's Nate included) would be at church for bible drill I might as well go with sister girl and help out in her room. And last but not least...my adult special needs class of 2 very special brother and sister down syndrome adults who I teach every other Sunday morning. I was scared to death about the first month doing it (there is a severely physical and mentally developed woman in a wheel chair) but I've since gotten a great helper in the class. I now love being around them...can't stop laughing at their conversations with me and love the hugs I get from sweet Jason!

I'm also learning to say no...ask me something, go ahead..."no!" See there I know I can do it! It should be a very exciting and busy year, but honestly I'm looking forward to every minute of it.

An impromptu day cation

It was Saturday morning and Elizabeth had been up before 6am and wouldn't stay down for a nap. So, after walking her around our neighborhood about 9am I rushed into the house with the best idea..."Nate, let's load everyone up and go to Swanee to the cross for a hike." Now, let me tell you that my sweet husband is studying every minute he can for three qualifying exams in his doctorate program that are this Monday-Wednesday. He wasn't to keen on my idea but when I prefaced it all with "you can stay in the van and study all day," he gave in.

So as quick as I could I packed up two backpacks with water bottles, journals, cameras for the boys (that is a sure way to keep a child busy) snacks and a box for finding treasures. We loaded in the van and took off...I wanted to share our day adventure in case anyone lives in Middle TN. We found the neatest places that are truly hidden treasures for an impromptu day cation!

First we drove to Winchester, which is a little off the interstate on your way to Chattanooga. Once we found the small town I took the boys to the square where "Hammers" is located. This is a huge store (covers an entire side of the square) that sells everything from ladies linen pant suits to material to nails and kids specialty toys all for discounted prices. We had so much fun looking at all the toys upstairs that were hidden from most customers eyes. 100's of puzzles and unique games. The boys each picked out a toy to be opened on Ian's birthday next week.

Then we drove to a small town diner for a hamburger, fries and coke on the square. You gotta love those diners on a square. That is what I grew up knowing as small town food since we didn't have McDonald's or even a Dairy Queen for crying out loud in our town!

We got back on the road to head to Swanee for the big adventure only to stop before we even left the town of Winchester for another adventure. There was this garden on the side of the road with hundreds of rock lined paths covering a couple of acres. The kids and I got out and just ran for almost an hour. Up and down the trails, hiding behind beautiful rose gardens and huge rocks. That was the best!

Then we piled back in the van again heading to our destination of Swanee. But...we pass through a teeny tiny town called Cowan where there was a couple of old steam trains sitting on the side of a track by a train station. The boys spotted them and asked if we could take a look so I turned the van around and went to check it out. Again we spent about an hour climbing on the trains, pretending to be engineers and Polar Express riders. The man volunteering at the station gave us a private tour of over 100 year old station with miniature train sets all over the place. He talked to Eli and now interested Nate about the old trains and how they worked with coal. We even got to see two real trains pass by while we were on top of the grounded trains!

Back in the van...now we are truly almost to Swanee. We pass through the wonderfully quaint town (if you have never been there it is super tiny and pretty much just houses the college of Swanee) with cathedral like buildings on the campus of Swanee. It is up on top of a mountain so the view is breathtaking! Students were moving in with new parents tagging alongside on the sidewalks...it was enough to make me cry thinking about my little ones in the van and where I will be one day when they too are old enough to set off on their own.

We drove down the 'secret' road to the cross and finally made it to our destination. The cross is a monument built to honor all those men and women of Swanee who had died in past wars. It overlooks the neighboring cities for a view that is so peaceful and well worth the drive! Even the boys took time to stop and photograph the lookout. We then took off on a short hike (I was by myself in the forest on top of a mountain with two boys and a baby in a pack...we weren't going too far). Eli looked at me and said "this is the best day mom!" That alone melted my heart b/c he often times seems so hard to please! It was truly the most fun day I have had with the kids all summer.

On the way home we stopped in Manchester to get ice cream at the Russel Stovers candy store (a well kept secret but the best place to get good quality ice cream cheap!) Tired and dirty we drove back home...and the best part? Elizabeth finally napped!

Sister Girl joins the club

Well if you are going to be a Callender you have to learn to get down with the best of them. Sister Girl has reached that important mile stone...enjoy!

First day of Kindergarten

I let out some tears this morning on the way to school with Ian. Not really because I was sad but because I was so happy we had finally made it to this year. He has been waiting to go to this school with his big brother & finally he gets to. He is now officially a big boy like Eli! He was nothing but smiles as he put on his new star wars shirt this morning. He told me as he was getting out of the car "Mom, I'm so happy!" I had to really stop and think...did he just say that. My boys don't always express their feelings (other then "I'M ANGRY!" towards each other). I will give last year credit for preparing him maturity wise for this year in school. He is very ready academically to be challenged and thankfully his teacher is prepared to do that with many of the older kids in the class. When I picked him up he told me every detail of his day (I'm not used to that...) and was excited about going a full day on Friday. I realize that sometimes we must all bear things that are not fun and are challenging in order to get to another stage where we can enjoy finally being there! (Ian's old school vs. this year) So, enjoy the pictures as they tell the story of Ian's first official day. I must add Eli is in his first full week of 2nd grade and seems to love it! His teacher "has a loud voice" but he is getting use to it. He is playing the shy card this week but I know once he gets use to Mrs. L he will show his true (and outgoing) colors.

I guess it's like gaining weight

Like gaining weight in that you don't realize you are doing it pound by pound until you see the consequences: paints won't button, underware lines show in the trunk, cheeks look a little poofy, feel a little tired walking up that "hill".

What is it? Disciplining your children. When they are young it seems like a daily/hourly chore to stay on top of your child's behavior. They are so (well, mine rather) me focused that you constantly are guiding them to share, apologize, not hit, say thank you. But when they get to that age...you know what that age is...I guess it is different for everyone...you realize "oh, it's been awhile since I had to correct little sammy" or "wow I haven't had to whip out the old tree branch in awhile" (ha ha ha --- had to put that).

I think along the lines of gaining weight slowly you also get used to certain things your children creep back into doing. You get lazy; they get smart or sly or maybe just persistent; you get distracted; they find new ways of doing the same thing. And then one day you realize Little Sammy has not been doing what I ask the first time (or second or third) in quite awhile. Actually, L.S. has been making these horrable whining noises along with rolling his eyes & putting a weird sarcastic tone to all his answers...and I have been in some zombie zone the whole time!

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH...CRACK DOWN! And then excuse my language but all hell brakes loose. The child who has learned that his parents had become zombies to his ill behavior now is having to step up and he doesn't like it. And at that point you have a choice. Do I go back to the numbing sensation of letting my child whine and having to tell him 10 times to do something or do I make a choice now to correct what is wrong and plow back to the straight and narrow road we once were on?

We went through all this last week. Dear sweet Eli who most everyone sees as a very well behaved child (never gets in trouble at school - he would die! well unless that old Chase or Eli CR tempt him...HAR HAR HAR), mostly polite to adults even when he turns his back to them and looks at me with those eyes like he could burn a hole through me telling me what he really thinks of the situation, can be at times the most strong willed child I've ever seen. And of course it is over the stupidest things ever.

The good part to all this is I have heard other moms say their 8 year old has carried on the same way lately. Crying uncontrollably over the silliest requests from his parents, refusing to do something so easy, being an emotional basketcase, yelling at his parents out of anger. It is truly the sadest thing to go through to realize you have to be the bad guy for awhile to get your child straightened out again. When they tell you that you are mean. When they don't want you to touch them (hug, sitting beside, etc.) when they look at you like they hate you.

But then after a few hours things settle down. Of course when it happends again the true test occurs. Do you go through that hour long disciplining snafu where you are the bad guy, sweating, making quick on the spot decisions about how to handle each curve ball of terror your child throws out at you, going into over time holding your ground, not wavering, not letting them see you falter until they finally cave in and do what was told or apologize to you (or brother) or whatever the problem at hand may be.

So, we continue our voyage down discipline road. It has been a hard week with sweet Eli but Nate and I are determined to work as a team and stick this out. Schools starting back; he is walking the straight and narrow for seven hours each day so I'm sure he's about ready to lose it when he gets home. I'll try to be more patient with my little emotional 2nd grader - BUT I WON'T GO BACK TO THE ZOMBIE ZONE!

Eli starts tomorrow...

So why am I so nervous tonight I could bust into tears any minute? I feel like I have a 1,000 butterflies in my stomach and that I'm about to hurl...I've already exercised, mopped the kitchen, swept the living room floor and washed a load of laundry - it's 9:30pm!!!!

Eli came out of his room around 9:15 fully dressed with shoes on and a huge grin. He can't sleep he's so excited/anxious. At least he isn't crying!

Please just let Mrs. L give him a hug??????? (fat chance)

I guess I will miss my baby after all -
